Before I introduce myself I'd like to let you know that I've been really wanting to talk about misconceptions about my country. I'm a 17-year-old Muslim from Saudi Arabia. I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and I've lived there my whole life. Now here's a list of the most common misconception about Saudi Arabia:
#1: It's a complete desert with neither roads nor buildings.
The most common of them all. I've come across several people who think that residents live in tents and use camels as a method of transportation by thats not what it's like at all. The majority of residents actually live in regular homes and use cars for transportation. I find this misconception kind of ironic since Saudi is the top oil exporting country. However, there is a minority of the citizens who actually choose to travel around the vast deserts by camels and settle in tents, but that's only a minority.
#2: As opposed to #1, Saudis are filthy rich and thus they live in enormous castles that are literally made of gold.
I honestly think that's insane! Firstly, not ALL Saudis are as wealthy as some might think, but a very large part of the population have the benefits of a high standard of living. This shouldn't be surprising because the country exports billions of barrels of oil on a daily basis. It is also one of the very few countries that are not in debt. Therefore, residents aren't required to pay taxes and the government will easily provide the financial aid for Saudi students who wish to study abroad for university.
#3: Men in Saudi Arabia are oppressive towards their woman.
As a daughter of a great Saudi father, I could tell you that men in Saudi Arabia are actually pretty open minded to an appropriate extent; they constantly encourage and assist woman to obtain education and use their creativity, and they give their wives and daughters all the freedom they need in life.
#4: Last but not least, all Saudis are terrorists.
That is a rather offensive stereotype about Saudis. I won't even elaborate much on this misconception; I'll just say what I believe is enough to clear it out.
The monarch, government, and people of Saudi Arabia all believe and follow the laws of one religion, which is Islam. The word “Islam” originated from the word “Salam”, which is literally “peace” in Arabic.
